Ethereum on Tour Asia University Roadshow: Building Academic Bridges, Nurturing the Next Generation of Ethereum Talent

10th November 2025

The Ethereum Foundation’s “Ethereum on Tour” Asia university roadshow recently concluded with great success, having made impactful stops in Hong Kong and Shanghai. As the only two destinations of this Asia tour, both cities brought distinct academic excellence and talent into focus, injecting fresh energy into the growth of the Ethereum ecosystem across the region.

Hong Kong: Integrating Industry, Academia & Research to Build an Ecosystem Hub

The Hong Kong tour took place on October 3 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, co-hosted by the University’s Research Centre for Blockchain Technology and the Ethereum Foundation Academic Secretariat. With SNZ and ETHTAO participating as strategic and community partners, respectively, the event attracted a full house of students, faculty, and developers from across Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific region.

A fireside chat featuring Tomasz Stańczak, Co-Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, alongside Shyam Sridhar (Team Lead of the EF Academic Secretariat), Gavin from SNZ Holding (Chief Investment Officer), and Patrick McCorry (Researcher at the Arbitrum Foundation), delved into the research direction and future vision of Ethereum. Discussions spanned Layer 2 roadmaps, consensus mechanism improvements, and other technical topics. Marius Van Der Wijden, Software Developer at the Ethereum Foundation, further provided a systematic overview of Ethereum’s scaling roadmap, giving attendees a clearer picture of the protocol’s evolving, global-scale technical vision.

A hands-on development workshop led by engineers from BuidlGuidl enabled students from top local universities—including The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong—to build their first Ethereum applications, showcasing both the technical skill and enthusiastic community engagement of Hong Kong’s academic youth.

Shanghai: Deepening Cryptographic Research, Cultivating Future Innovators

As the second stop of the tour, the event moved to Shanghai Jiao Tong University and East China Normal University, with a strong focus on cutting-edge cryptography and academic research. Both institutions contributed deep expertise in cryptography and computer science, laying a solid academic foundation for the gathering. This event was co-organized by the John Hopcroft Center for Computer Science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the School of Cryptography at East China Normal University, the Ethereum Foundation, and its Academic Secretariat, with organizational support from SNZ Capital and ETHTAO.

Presentations from Tomasz Stańczak on Ethereum’s research frontiers, and from Shyam Sridhar on how the EF Academic Secretariat fosters research clusters and academic collaboration to advance Ethereum’s public goods mission, sparked strong interest among students and faculty. Engaging Q&A sessions covered topics such as pathways to contributing to Ethereum core research and balancing academic exploration with engineering practice.

Deep-dive discussions among doctoral students on topics like the integration of FHE and ZK technologies highlighted Shanghai’s strong academic capabilities in cryptography.

East Meets West: Universities as Driving Force of Ecosystem Growth

As the key supporting partners, SNZ and ETHTAO played vital roles in bridging academic communities with the core Ethereum ecosystem. By organizing these two events, they helped establish direct connections between students across Asia and the Ethereum Foundation—laying a strong foundation for cultivating the next generation of Ethereum researchers and builders.

The success of the Ethereum on Tour Asia university series marks a new stage of growth for the ecosystem in the region. As more students and researchers engage with Ethereum, Asia is transitioning from a market of technology adoption into a vital force in global ecosystem development.

Moving forward, SNZ and ETHTAO will continue to deepen collaboration with academic institutions—amplifying Asian voices in Ethereum’s core development and collectively advancing the vision of the “World Computer.”
